An immigrant arrival to Majorca after survival from sinking off the Libyan coast

MAJORCA – According to AFP, two ships belonging to the organization “Proactiva Openarms” arrived at Palma harbor in Majorca with an immigrant survivor and two bodies of a woman and a boy, who were lifted off the coast of Libya last Tuesday.

The survivor, a 40-year-old Cameron woman named Josepha, was found to be suffering from low-grade fever, along with a woman and a young boy who died shortly before on a rubber boat off the coast of Libya.

On Wednesday, in an effort to ensure that Josefa was “protected” and “fully free to testify”, the NGO decided to go to Spain after Italy showed willingness to receive the survivor in Sicily but not the bodies.

The organization accused the Libyan Coast Guard of rescuing the other migrants aboard the boat and leaving the two women and the child.

The Libyan Coast Guard stated that it had rescued 165 migrants on a rubber boat in the same area on Monday night, but they denied leaving anyone aboard.

The organization said that, after stopping in Palma, it would return off the coast of Libya to continue its mission.

A press conference is due to be held in Palma in the presence of its founder Oscar Campes and the Spanish basketball star Marc Gathol, who took part in the rescue operation.
