The Address | Benghazi – Libya
TRIPOLI – Al-Mahdi Al-Barghathi, the Minister of Defense in the Tripoli-based Presidential Council, refused to respect the Resolution of exemption issued by Fayez al-Sarraj, the President of the Presidential Council, considering that the decision as “null and void”, except the administrative judiciary and the competent authorities decide otherwise.
“Resolution No. 1118 of 2018 is null and void and will not be respected by us, except after it is adopted by the administrative judiciary and the competent authorities because the Resolution is issued based on the de facto authority, not the law,” al-Barghathi said.
Al-Barghathi added,”the decision to exempt me from the Ministry of Defense without announcing the results of the investigation is a hidden punishment for the Brak al-Shati Massacre and is contrary to the law and covers those involved in it and a message to the public that I am responsible for this crime.”
At least 141 people were murdered in May 2017 after extremist militias loyal to GNA raided Brak El-Shati airbase. Human Rights Watch accused the Misurata 13th brigade, Misurata 3rd Force, officially falling under the authority of Government of National Accord, and extremist Benghazi Defense Brigades militia of summary executions of both civilians and soldiers.
