Libyan Coast Guard recovering 100 bodies of migrants in 2018

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

CAIRO – The Libyan Coast Guard has recovered about 100 bodies off the coast of Libya for illegal immigrants who died during their migration to Europe since the beginning of 2018, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Monday.

A UNHCR statement said late on Sunday that as of July 31, the Libyan Coast Guard had rescued 12,633 migrants in the Mediterranean near its shores.

Libya has become a major transit point for Europe for migrants fleeing poverty and civil war in various parts of Africa.

Human traffickers have exploited the current situation in Libya following the February 17, 2011 revolution.

European extreme right-wing parties have also exploited the issue of migrants’ crisis to gain electoral support.
