Mosques in western Libya used by ISIS & al-Qaeda to radicalize & recruit youths, NHRC confirm

TRIPOLI – Ahmed Abdul Karim Hamza, an official with Libya’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), has stated that several mosques in western Libya that is officially under the UN-backed Presidential Council are being used by ISIS and al-Qaeda to radicalize and recruit youths.

The NHRC official identified some of the locations as Tripoli, Bani Walid, Ain Azar, Sabratha, and Sirte.

However, mosques of eastern Libya – Cyrenaica are run by the Authority of Awqaf Islamic Affairs and Holy Places of the Libyan Interim Government. The moderate authority started to run the Cyrenaica mosques after several cities were liberated from extremist groups such as ISIS & al-Qaeda by the Libyan National Army (LNA).
