Armed clashes in Tripoli

TRIPOLI – Clashes of heavy weapons broke out between militias south-west of Tripoli, identical sources said on Monday.

According to the sources, the clashes took place between the battalion of Tripoli Rebels and Battalion 301 of the Tripoli Military Region on the one hand, and the seventh brigade (Alkaniat) of the Defense Ministry of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) on the other hand.

Witnesses told the Address newspaper that there were armed clashes in the areas of Wadi Al-Rabie and Khallet al-Furjan. They confirmed that there were loud booms in the clashes. Pictures also showed the rising of smoke poles in the vicinity of Yarmouk military camp.

According to some sources, there were violent clashes with heavy and medium weapons in the area of Salah al-Din and Ein Zara led to fall of shells on homes, causing panic among the residents of the area.

The Tripoli Military District of the Presidential Council of GNA, issued on Sunday, a statement confirming the presence of armed groups, not named, spread in the suburbs of Greater Tripoli and threatening of the use of force against its camps and engaging Tripoli in combat.

GNA pointed out that it deployed military units in some areas, in order to maintain security and intervene when it is necessary, as stated.

“We will stand firm and resolute in the face of anyone wants to tamper with the security of Tripoli and to intimidate the safe and enter the city in combat operations, in which the winner is a loser,” GNA stated.
