Guterich condemns escalation of armed violence in Tripoli

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

LIBYA – UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterich, condemned on Saturday the continued escalation of violence in and around Tripoli, especially the indiscriminate shelling, killing and wounding civilians, including children.

Guterich, in a statement posted on the UN Mission’s official website, expressed his deep condolences to those who lost their loved ones, reminding all parties that the indiscriminate use of force violates international humanitarian law and human rights law.

Guterich urged all parties to allow humanitarian access to all those in need, particularly those trapped by the fighting, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and compliance with the Reconciliation Committees and UN-brokered ceasefire agreement.

The Spokesman for the Secretary-General confirmed that his Special Envoy, Ghassan Salame, would continue to exert his good office and work with all parties to reach a lasting political agreement acceptable to all to avoid further loss of lives and for the benefit of all the Libyan people.
