Sarkozy campaign manager indicted over Libyan finance

PARIS – Electoral campaign manager of the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s is now being prosecuted for “complicity in illegal campaign financing and passive bribery” in connection with the investigation into the alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 election campaign.

Previously charged in this case in 2015 for “money laundering tax fraud organized”, Claude Guéant is the subject of new indictments including for “passive bribery”, “complicity and concealment of this offense”. As well as “concealment of embezzlement of public funds”, and for “complicity in illegal financing of election campaign”, as reported by French newspaper Le Figaro.

Sarkozy has been charged with corruption and exploitation of influence. French prosecutors say his campaign received in 2007 funding from Muammar Gaddafi, former Libyan dictator, for $ 50 million, while Sarkozy denies the charges as an “attempt to defame him.”
