Italian ambassador Perrone decides not to return to Libya “because his presence in Tripoli causes misunderstanding”

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – Italian Ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Perrone has decided not to return to Tripoli, Italy’s Foreign Minister Enzo Milanese said.

In an address to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Parliament, Milanese said that the ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Perrone, would remain in Rome because his presence in Tripoli causes a “misunderstanding”.

The minister explained that the international conference on Libya organized by Italy in the first half of November will be held in the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

The Italian Ambassador has played down the value of the demonstrations demanding the holding of the elections and condemning the Italian intervention in Libyan affairs, saying, “The numbers are no more than 20 or 30 people.” He also reiterated Italy’s opposition to holding the elections stipulated in the Paris Agreement.

At the same time, the Italian ambassador’s remarks raised a wave of condemnation among the Libyan parliamentarians and the political and social circles in the country
