MOGADISHU – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) said on Saturday that US forces carried out a self-defense air strike against Al-Shabaab militant group in the Lower Juba province in southern Somalia, killing about 18 “militants.”

It said Somali government troops accompanying the US unit killed two other “militants loyal to the al Qaeda-linked militant group” with light weapons during the clash on Friday.

“The US air strike was carried out against the militants after US and coalition forces were attacked,” the command said in a statement. “We are currently evaluating whether any civilian casualties have been killed,” It added.

US forces in Somalia support the UN-backed government against the hardline al-Shabaab Islamist group, which has lost control of most of Somalia’s towns and cities after withdrawing from Mogadishu in 2011.
