Mogherini: Elections’ conditions in Libya are more important than dates

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

NEW YORK –  High Representative of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Federica Mogherini, said elections’ conditions in Libya are more important than dates and how sooner it will be. Speaking today at the end of the summit of EU ministers, held in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Mogherini said, “It is not so much a matter of dates… but it is a matter of getting to the elections in Libya with the conditions for the vote to serve the country to get out of the situation in which it is”

“Elections must be prepared properly, which means a clear constitutional and legal framework, so that citizens know why they are voting, both for the Parliament and for electing president, what are the powers, what is the institutional framework of these elections. There must be adequate security conditions and, above all, it should be a political process that leads to the acceptance by all parties of the results after the elections. ” Mogherini stated.

Recent clashes in the capital have raised questions about the prospect of holding secure elections, yet Mogherini reiterated the EU support for elections in the country, stating,”the position of the EU is clear and united, the elections are a fundamental moment”.

Tripoli recently witnessed violent clashes between rival militias all funded by the proposed Government of National Accord, which resulted in the killing of more than 100 people, while hundreds of others were wounded, displaced, or missing.

On the other hand, the Libyan National Army spokesman Brigadier General Ahmed al-Massmari said that LNA has nothing to do with the ongoing clashes between the militias in Tripoli, and that the army continues to fully secure all the areas under its control such as the entire region of Cyrenaica east of Libya, and large parts of the south and the Libyan west.
