Trump: International Criminal Court has no legitimacy

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

NEW YORK – U.S. president Donald Trump delivered today his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in which he criticized the UN and told world leaders the U.N. Human Rights Council is “a grave embarrassment” and that the U.N.-linked International Criminal Court “has no legitimacy.”

“The United States will provide no support and recognition to the International Criminal Court,” Trump said. “As far as America is concerned, the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy, and no authority. The ICC claims near-universal jurisdiction over the citizens of every country, violating all principles of justice, fairness, and due process.”

The Trump administration previously criticized the ICC for its attempt to launch an investigation into US war crimes in Afghanistan. The U.S. opposition to the court dates back a decade ago when it refused to ratify the ICC’s founding document in 2002.
