The Address | Benghazi – Libya
LIBYA – The number of migrants crossing Libya to Europe has gone down since last year, but the proportion of those who die on the way has risen.
One person died or went missing for every 18 people who crossed via the central Mediterranean route between January and July 2018, compared to one in 42 people in the same period in 2017, BBC quoted the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.
Migrants cross Libya through the Western Region where militias, most of them backed by the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), control the situation, according to the Address sources.
It is mentioned that Italy had paid five million dollars to Libyan human traffickers to urge them to stop sending migrants across the Mediterranean for just a month last year.
