The Address | Benghazi – Libya
ROME – The Italian government has intensified its contacts and statements on the call for an international conference on Libya that will be held November 12-13 in Palermo, the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. It justified the city’s choice for “its proximity to what is happening in Libya.”
In a briefing to the Senate in Rome, Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said his country would host the conference in an effort to bring together Libyan rival forces and establish dialogue in the country. “Italian government expects the participation of key parties from within and outside Libya,” Milanesi added.
He said he will visit Moscow next Monday to discuss the situation in Libya with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, while noting the support of US President Donald Trump for the Italian initiative.
Rome expects high-level delegations from Libya, the Gulf states, Turkey and the European Union to participate. It is not yet clear whether the Libyan National Army Commander, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, one of the main parties to the crisis who met in Paris last May, will attend the conference.
