MOSCOW – Head of the international committee of the Russian Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, responded in a media statement on Tuesday to allegations made by British newspaper The Sun regarding Russian presence in Libya.

Kosachev described the newspaper’s allegation that Russia would enable illegal migration to Europe through Libya as “illusions” while accusing the UK and its NATO allies of creating chaos in Libya in 2011.

“Only Russia did not allow Britain and its NATO allies to turn Syria into a “new Libya”, said Kosachev in his statement.

The Sun published a report on Monday accusing Russia of strengthening its military presence in Libya “in bid to enforce stranglehold on the West”. The newspaper quoted a UK intelligence source as saying that Russia is planning to turn Libya into a “new Syria”.
