Aboul Gheit calls for imposing tough sanctions on those who obstruct political solution in Libya

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

BARCELONA – Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said in an interview with Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday that Libyan oil money is used to destroy Libya and its infrastructure and called upon the United Nations to impose tough sanctions against those who obstruct political solution in the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of his participation in the Union of the Mediterranean’s third Regional Forum in Barcelona, Aboul Gheit pointed out to a growing conviction among many countries on the impossibility of holding legislative and presidential elections before 10 December.

Aboul Gheit said that he noted indications among the UN and Western countries to hold “an extensive meeting of all leaders, parties, groups and representatives of cities and tribes for days or weeks to achieve a real consensus that brings Libya out of its current divisions.”

Aboul Gheit said that such a meeting would be similar to “Loya Jirga”, a traditional meeting of tribal representatives in Afghanistan.
