The Address | Benghazi – Libya
LUXEMBOURG – The European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini told reporters, in a press conference following her meeting with EU foreign ministers, that she discussed with them the need for coordination with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) regarding the imposition of sanctions against militias in Tripoli whom are destabilizing the peace process.
“What we discussed today with the Foreign Ministers of the EU Member States is the need for the EU Member States that are currently sitting in the UN Security Council to coordinate positions in this respect and coordinate very closely with Salamé [Head of UNSMIL] to support their proposals”, she said.
Regarding the smuggling of oil, Mogherini said that the EU is “starting to monitor” the issue and revealed that EU foreign ministers decided to look out ways in which national central banks in the European Union Member States can trace the money flows so it can be “more effective in determining who is acting on which fronts, be it smuggling of oil, of arms, or of human beings”.
Mogherini also affirmed EU’s support for the Palermo conference on Libya, for UNSMIL and for elections in Libya “but with the right security and political framework”.
