ROME – The headquarters of the Italian government in Rome, Chigi Palace, witnessed a major meeting between the general commander of the Libyan National Army LNA, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
The meeting discussed the latest developments in the Libyan crisis, the ways to deal with controversial issues, the development of relations between Libya and Italy, the speed of conducting legislative and executive elections in accordance with the Paris Agreement, in addition to the crisis of expiry of the legal periods of various political bodies.
The meeting discussed the fate of the armed militias in western Libya, specifically the capital, Tripoli.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the General Commander reviewed the issue of the Libyan athletes arrested in Italy on charges of illegal migration. The Italian side requested a speedy release of the athletes and returning them home as well as the closure of this sensitive file of the national army.
The General Commander stressed to the Italian Prime Minister that this issue of illegal migration requires joint cooperation between Europe and Libya in order to avoid further tragedies of migrants and those trying to escape bad condition of their countries and build a future in Europe and other countries.
