Italy’s Defense Minister: We have a special interest in Libya for its strategic importance to Rome

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – Italy’s Defense Minister, Elisabetta Trenta, said that Rome’s commitment “has become much broader, as a result of renewed strategic attention to the African continent – particularly with regard to North Africa and the Sub-Saharan belt, resulting from specific needs for national security and defense.”

In a speech on the occasion of the opening of the new academic year of the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, Trenta stated,”obviously we are very committed to Libya, to the geographical, historical, cultural and even economic significance for us, and of course also to the great influence that has been and still is on the phenomenon of irregular migration flows into the Mediterranean.”
