TRIPOLI – United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned on Saturday the attack on Sabratha and warned against further escalation.

UNSMIL reiterated that attacks on civilian facilities and endangering civilians are prohibited by the international human rights law.

Clashes broke out between forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) and militias on Sunday when the latter attacked the city in an attempt to control it. No civilian deaths were reported, but the attack resulted in the damage of two school.

According to local security officials, these militias are affiliated with militant Ahmed al-Dabbashi, also known as Al Ammu, whom is a subject of sanctions by Security Council over migrant trafficking. UNSMIL stated that elements on the sanctions list are under intense scrutiny.
