The Address | Benghazi – Libya

TRIPOLI – A leaked document obtained by The Address reveals that the Presidential Council of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Fayez Al-Sarraj, gave permission to its Belgian embassy to use Libya’s frozen assets with the complicity of the Belgian Government

The document was issued by GNA’s Foreign Ministry on October 16th 2016. It gave permission to the Libyan embassy in Belgium to use an amount of over a one million euros (1,419,779.53) from Libya’s frozen assets in Belgium.

Belgium is currently under scrutiny following reports of the country’s abuse of Libya’s assets which was frozen under the UN Security Council resolution of 2011.

Belgian radio RTBF reported that Brussels had financed Libyan militias through the use of interest and dividends on accounts frozen under United Nations sanctions in 2011. RTBF said that when the UN agreed to freeze deposits held by Gaddafi’s administration abroad, Belgium had done so but had not halted payments of interest and dividends.
