BENGHAZI – Sources close to the general command of the Libyan National Army denied today that Marshal Khalifa Haftar had changed his mind about participating in the Palermo conference after meeting with the head of Italian intelligence.
The sources said in a statement to The Address today that Marsha Haftar, General Commander of the Libyan National Army, is still on his position and will not participate in the Palermo conference on Libya organized by the Italian government next week.
Italian media reported on Friday said that the head of Italian intelligence had visited Moscow and convinced Marshal Haftar to participate in the Palermo conference.
Marshal Haftar had visited Moscow Thursday and met with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu.
Last month, sources told The Address that Marshal Haftar is expected not to attend the conference because of the lack of clarity of the goals behind it, and the lack of a specific agenda for the conference, in addition to not knowing the personalities to be invited.
