Conte: Palermo conference will not stand as an isolated episode

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, said in an official statement on Friday that the Palermo conference on Libya “will not stand as an isolated episode. It will mark a fundamental step in a long path along which Italy will continue to walk together with the Libyan people, step by step, under the aegis of the United Nations and with the support of the international community.”

According to Conte, the goal of the event, which will be held on November 12th and 13th, is to provide a tangible contribution to the stabilization process of the Country, in full agreement with the main Libyan political actors, who will have a leading role in Palermo.

He also stated that choosing the city of Palermo to host the conference was not “accidental”, adding, “it represents the closeness between Italy and Libya, being Sicily the icon of a Mediterranean that refuses to be labelled as a “crisis area” and that wants to be considered again as a region of encounter between cultures, of peaceful cohabitation, of dialogue and of opportunities for the young generations.”

Conte stressed that the conference’s goal is “to bring substance to the stabilization process, also by promoting specific and substantial progress in the fields of security and economy.”

Conte also revealed the official logo for the conference along with its motto: “For Libya, with Libya”.
