The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – Former Minister of Communication, Maurizio Gasparri, said on Sunday that the Palermo conference on Libya is “a useless meeting between minor figures” after General Commander of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, declined to participate.

Gasparri told Italian news agency Askanews that Field Marshal Haftar is a “crucial interlocutor for the success of the meeting.”

“What we have been doing for days now, on the Palermo conference on Libya, was an easy prophecy. After the absence of all the international leaders involved, today we confirm that Haftar, whom is also a crucial interlocutor for the success of the meeting, will not be in Sicily.” Gasparri said.

The former minister, who served under the government of Silvio Berlusconi, also criticized “the inconsistency of Italian foreign policy” which he says made “this meeting a useless meeting between minor figures.”

“They are also wary of the presence in Palermo of representatives of Qatar and groups linked to Al Qaeda.” Gasparri said before adding that after the internal disasters, Giuseppe Conte’s government also become “an international fool”.
