PALERMO – Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, said in a tweet via his official account on Tuesday that “Italy brings together the protagonists of the Mediterranean and re-launches dialogue for Libya”
Conte’s statement came following a security meeting on Libya which also discussed combating terrorism and illegal immigration. It was headed by Conte and was attended by General Commander of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Russian Premier Dmitry Medvedev, the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi, Algeria’s Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, the President of the EU Council Donald Tusk, the French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.
Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé, and chairman of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, were also present.
After the meeting, the General Commander of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, left the city of Palermo. Field Marshal Haftar denied his participation in the Palermo conference, stressing that participation is limited to the delegation of the General Command, which was sent four days ago and who participated actively in the conference.
