The Address | Benghazi – Libya
ROME – Italy and Qatar discuss bilateral relations and the Libyan dossier as Romes hosts the Qatari Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who arrived with a large delegation in the Italian capital on Monday.
In a meeting with Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, Al Thani said that he wished to achieve “positive results”regarding the situation in Libya after the Palermo Conference.
Mattarella, for his part, thanked Al Thani for “the highly collaborative participation in the Palermo Conference.” Italy’s Foreign Minister, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, was also present at the meeting.
Both Italy and Qatar back Islamists in western Libya and have expressed their opposition to holding elections in the country. Several regional countries have accused Qatar of being the primary cause of instability in Libya as it provides political and military support to radical militias in violation of the United Nations arms embargo.
