The Address | Benghazi – Libya
TARHUNA – Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé, said on Saturday that the upcoming National Conference (Al-Multaqa Al-Watani) will allow Libyans to decide on an election date.
During his visit to Tarhuna, where he met with local municipal council members, Salamé said the National Conference will also allow Libyans to determine the constitutional framework for the elections and the mechanism to distribute the resources among other issues.
Salamé affirmed that any recommendations made by the Conference will be taken to the United Nations Security Council which will push for their implementation.
The UN representative proposed that a national conference be held in first weeks of 2019 during his Security Council briefing in early November. He said that the electoral process should commence in the Spring of 2019 following the conference.
