34 bodies recovered from ISIS mass grave

SIRTE – The bodies of 34 Ethiopian Christians executed in the city of Sirte by terrorist group ISIS in 2015 have been exhumed from a mass grave, local authorities said on Monday.

Member of the Department Criminal Investigation, Ali Taweelb, said in a media statement that interrogations of detained ISIS members brought the investigators to the place of the mass grave.

A video posted on social media in April 2015 showed Ethiopians dressed in orange suits slaughtered and beheaded on a beach by IS members. Thousands of people in sub-Saharan Africa have tried in recent years to reach Europe by crossing Libya.

Taweelb called on families of the missing to go to the Department’s office to get DNA samples and identify the bodies.

ISIS took control of Sirte in 2015 and lost the city late in 2016 to forces backed by U.S. air strikes.
