German Institute for Security Affairs: Tripoli is the capital of militias

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

TRIPOLI – The German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) A report on the state and future of the conflict in Libya under the militias’ domination and control of the capital.

In its report, the institute described the security situation in Tripoli as alarming and said it turned the country “from everyone’s rule to minority rule between 2011 and 2018.”

The report states that since the arrival of the UN-backed Government of National Accord in Tripoli, four large local militias have divided the capital in March 2016 gradually. Although they are superficially loyal to the Tripoli-based government, they are currently exerting unprecedented influence on state institutions and resources in Libya in an era After Gaddafi.

The institute concluded that the situation is very fragile in Tripoli, raising fears of provoking a major dispute over Tripoli with those who were excluded from access to state resources and hindering efforts to establish an effective unity government.
