ISIS claims responsibility for failed assassination attempt against mayor of Zawiya

ZAWIYA – Terrorist group ISIS on Sunday claimed responsibility for a failed assassination attempt against mayor of Zawiya, Abdul Karim Al-Abeh.

The terrorist organization said in a statement that one of its members managed to plant an explosive device in a car in front of the mayor’s house, but local sources confirmed that the explosion did not result in any injuries.

ISIS used to control Sirte from 2015 to 2016, before Libyan forces combined with U.S. airstrikes managed to defeat the terror group. Although it no longer controls Libyan territory, ISIS sleeper cells still carry out terrorist attacks in western Libya, the last of which was an attack on the Tripoli-based Foreign Ministry last Tuesday.
