TRIPOLI – Interior Minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bashagha, has accused battalions affiliated with his ministry of causing chaos in Tripoli, pointing out that these battalions have become parallel entities.
Bashagha said in a televised statement that these parallel entities were “nominally” affiliated with his ministry because they had an overbearing power and dominated the budget of the ministry and its political, financial and economic decisions.
“These parallel entities have become a force parallel to the ministry and its direct services. We can not call them armed groups or militias that follow the administrative obedience, because these armed groups do not obey the Libyan state institutions such as the Ministry of Interior or Intelligence Services or Criminal Investigation Services. They do whatever they want,” He said.
The Tripoli-based government has been struggling for years to impose security in the capital amid the presence of criminal and terrorist militias. Bashagha has been trying to integrate these militias into his ministry yet such failed attempts have only legitimized the militias’ presence without producing beneficial results to the capital’s security.
