TRIPOLI – The Interior Ministry of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) issued a statement on Saturday warning that “attempts to return to square one and call for the mobilization of troops or individuals for the purpose of harming the security of the people of Tripoli will not be acceptable at all.”
This comes following a statement by the so-called Tripoli Protection Force, one of many militias affiliated with the ministry, in which it threatened Interior Minister, Fathi Bashagha, by name and accused him of carrying out foreign agenda and trying to “plunge the capital Tripoli once again into a bloody war,”
In response, the ministry warned against destabilization which “will be confronted appropriately to prevent chaos and encroachment on the lives of people based on a seemingly righteous grounds but deep inside it’s a mirage,”
Bashagha had previously acknowledged that militias affiliated with his ministry have become parallel entities which dominates the ministry’s decision-making and do whatever it wants.
These threats also casts doubt on the prospect of elections which is due to be held in spring of 2019.
