The Address | Benghazi – Libya
MALTA – The Head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, is in Malta for talks with the Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
It is the first meeting between the two leaders since they met for a conference on Libya hosted by the Italian government in Palermo in November.
They greeted each other warmly on the steps of the Auberge de Castille before proceeding inside for talks expected to focus on the unstable situation in Libya, the aftermath of the Palermo conference, the migration situation and bilateral relations, according to Times of Malta.
Those accompanying Dr Muscat include Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne and ministers Michael Farrugia, Chris Cardona, Konrad Mizzi and Carmelo Abela. Former Foreign Minister Alex Sceberras Trigona, who has served as Dr Muscat’s envoy, is also present.
“Welcoming Libyan PM Fayez al-Sarraj at the International Airport for his official visit to Malta, during which Malta and Libya will be having bilateral talks in Valletta with PM Joseph Muscat, mainly discussing the unstable situation in Libya and migration,” Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Camelo Abela, tweeted, with pictures of him receiving al-Sarraj.
The migrants exodus from Libya has put pressure on Italy and Malta, with both countries seeking to have the migrants distributed among other EU countries while refusing to open their harbors to rescue ships operated by NGOs.
