GNA’s Interior Ministry links its control of Tripoli airport to the outbreak of clashes

TRIPOLI – Interior Ministry of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) called for ending clashes and armed mobilization in south of Tripoli, which broke out on Tuesday.

In a statement, the ministry expressed its deep concern about what it described as security breaches, noting that these clashes occurred in conjunction with its coordination with the Ministry of Communications to take control of Tripoli airport from the Joint Security Chamber Tarhuna.

The ministry said that the area south of Tripoli, specifically Qasr Ben Ghashir area, witnessed since Tuesday deterioration in the security situation and deterioration in the humanitarian situation, which led to the suspension of classes in many schools. The ministry said civilians were terrorized by due to clashes between uncontrolled armed groups.

The ministry warned of any attempt to impose a policy of fait accompli on the perimeter of Tripoli airport and considers it unacceptable because “the airport is a vital and sovereign annex that can not be subordinated or submitted to any regional or militia force whatsoever.”

The ministry concluded by warning that it will take necessary measures to secure the airport.
