Freelance journalist killed amid Tripoli clashes

TRIPOLI – A freelance journalist who contributed to The Associated Press and other news organisations was killed Saturday in the Libyan capital, a colleague said.

Mohamed Ben Khalifa, who was in his 30s, was hit by shrapnel from an exploding bomb in the fighting zone in Qasr Bin Ghashir area south of Tripoli, said the Tripoli-based Health Ministry.

Journalists in Tripoli have long been facing life-threatening difficulties as militias and forces of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) continue to obstruct their work.

On Wednesday morning, armed clashes broke out between GNA-funded militias; the so-called Tripoli Protection Force and the 7th Brigade in the Qasr Ben Ghashir area south of Tripoli.
