Minniti: Libya is not a safe harbor for migrants

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

ROME – Former Italian Interior Minister, Marco Minniti, said in media statements on Friday that Libya is not a safe haven for migrants and he criticized the policies of his predecessor, Matteo Salvini.

Minniti said that the reason Libya is not a safe harbor is because “Libya has never signed the Geneva Convention. The Geneva Convention of 1951. The international community has a certain responsibility on this,”

The Geneva Convention of 1951 is related to the status of refugees. It defines who is a refugee, and sets out the rights of individuals who are granted asylum and the responsibilities of nations that grant asylum.

Minniti also criticized Salvini’s policies on migration, which he says risks isolating himself from the world.
