UN envoy meets with representatives from Tawergha

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

TRIPOLI – UN Special Representative of Secretary-General in Libya Ghassan Salame & his Deputy for Political Affairs Stephanie Williams met today with elders & civil society representatives from Tawergha.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to address post-return issues and providing immediate needs to the city, said the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Tuesday.

It is noteworthy that the residents of Tawergha, about 40,000 population, were displaced from their city by militias from the neighboring city of Misrata around eight years ago accusing them of supporting Gaddafi in 2011 uprising.

An agreement was signed recently to return the Tawerghans to their city, but reports say that the city infrastructure is severely destroyed making it very difficult for families to live there currently.
