More than 100 migrants in distress off Libyan shores

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

KHOMS – A boat carrying more than a hundred migrants is in distress off Libyan shores, an NGO reported on Monday.

Alarm Phone, which is an independent hotline for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea, stated via Twitter that it received a call from migrants on board a boat coming from the city of Khoms in Libya. The migrants told Alarm Phone that their engine stopped working.

Among those on board are more than 50 women, including pregnant women, and 30 children. Alarm Phone stated that it informed authorities in Italy and Malta upon receiving the call.

The migrants later told Alarm Phone in a separate call that they saw a boat in the far distance. They also saw a plane fly over them.

Alarm Phone lost contact with the migrants after the last call but said Italian authorities had informed the Libyan Coast Guard. The NGO said it fears that “the people are currently being abducted back to horrible detention camps in Libya.”
