Russian diplomat: ISIS stepping up activity in Libya, including Tripoli

The Address | Benghazi – Libya

MOSCOW – Terrorist organizations ISIS and Al-Qaeda  have been building up ties in Libya, Russia’s special presidential representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told the Middle East conference of the discussion club Valdai on Monday.

“In Libya, including Tripoli, ISIS is boosting its activities benefiting from the collapse of government institutions and territorial divisions. The terrorist group is boosting ties with al-Qaeda which is raising its head near the Oil Crescent,” Bogdanov said

ISIS controlled Libya coastline from 2015 to 2016, before Libyan forces combined with United States’ airstrikes wiped out ISIS combatants from the area. Although it no longer controls Libyan territory, ISIS sleeper cells still lurk in different parts of the country.
