The Italian multinational oil and gas company Eni announced today that El Fell (the elephant) Oil field in southwest Libya is now secure after it was controlled by the Libyan National Army last Thursday.
The oilfield is operated by the Tripoli-based National Oil Corporation and Italian multinational Eni, and features output totaling roughly 75,000 barrels per day.
“At no stage was El Feel field staff or facilities at risk. No impact on activities has been reported, the field is producing regularly,” said a spokesperson for Eni, in an email to Kallanish Energy sent Friday.
“LNA has peacefully extended control over Alfeel oilfield, we are securing the location, and it will be handed over to oil facilities guards shortly,” tweeted the LNA spokesperson Thursday.
The LNA handed over to NOC the El Sharara oilfield earlier in February, which had been occupied by tribesmen and state guards in December. Production will not be resumed until security inspections are completed.
Securing the El Feel field comes within a wide military operation launched by the Libyan National Army in mid-January to secure southern Libya from organized crime groups, and human smuggling militias and illegal immigration.
