The Address | Benghazi – Libya
SHARM EL SHEIKH – Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, on Sunday alluded to a possible future meeting with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA).
“I care a lot about the Libyan situation because it is strategic for Italy,” said Conte, as he spoke with reporters in the margins of the first Arab League-European Union summit in Egypt where he already met with Prime Minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj.
“At this moment there are significant movements by General Haftar that we are following.” he said, in a reference to LNA’s recent military operation in the southern region.
“I had an update with Al-Sarraj, I will soon also have an update also with General Haftar,” he said without giving further details.
“We follow any developments and we believe that the solution can only go from a dialogue. Everyone will have to give up something, we need to find a compromise to speed up this political process ,” said the Italian premier.
