SEVILLE – Vice-President of the Sicilian Region, Gaetano Armao, announced on Wednesday that Sicily will soon join the Nicosia Initiative in support of Libyan municipalities.

“Relations between Sicily and Libya are very old,” explained Armao, who was in Seville, where he participated in the plenary session of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM).

During the plenary session, it was announced that, starting from 2019, ARLEM will provide a specific funding line to strengthen and expand the initiative.

In Seville, Armao stated that he met with representatives of the Libyan municipality of Zliten whom attended the session.

Nicosia Initiative was created in 2016 by ARLEM to promote the development of the Libyan municipalities through cooperation with local EU authorities on specific projects. So far, eight Libyan cities and several European institutions have been involved.
