The Address | Benghazi – Libya
WASHINGTON – The United Stated, United Kingdom, France and Italy welcomed on Friday the meeting between General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and Head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, which took place on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.
“We welcome UN leadership in convening Prime Minister al-Sarraj and LNA Commander Haftar on February 27 and commend the efforts of the Government of the United Arab Emirates to facilitate this discussion.” reads the joint statement of the four governments.
The four governments reiterated their “strong support” for UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Ghassan Salamé and the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
“We welcome the announcement by UNSMIL that a political agreement could be reached on the need to end the transitional stages in Libya through holding general elections, and on ways to maintain stability in the country and unify its institutions.”
The four governments also welcomed the agreement to resume oil production at El-Sharara field which was secured by LNA earlier on February.
