The Address | Benghazi – Libya
TRIPOLI – Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé, said on Sunday he will announce the date of the national conference (Al-Multaqa Al-Watani) “within days”.
In a media statement, Salamé also said that the national conference will be held in less than a month, noting that the UN mission is currently working to finish some of the necessary logistical arrangements in this regard.
The UN envoy revealed that the national conference will represent 23 groups of all Libyans. These 23 groups include mayors of cities, political parties, university presidents, union heads, tribal sheikhs, municipal representatives, members of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, all social and political components and ethnic minorities. He added that there will be one or two representatives for each group.
Salamé pointed out that the UN mission studied the situation in 14 Libyan cities to choose one of them to host the events of the conference. He said that the choices were limited to three cities, one of which will host the conference, noting that he will soon choose the city.
Ghassan Salamé proposed that a national conference be held in the first weeks of 2019 during his Security Council briefing in early November last year. He said that the electoral process should commence in the Spring of 2019 following the conference.
