Leaked document reveals that Belgium unfreezed more than 2 billion of Libyan funds

BRUSSELS –  The precise amount of the interests of Libya’s funds unfreezed by Belgium is 2.07 billion euros, Belgian newspaper L’Echo reported on Friday.

L’Echo cited a note written by lawyers of Belgian bank Euroclear sent just a year ago to Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt and investigating judge Michel Claise, among others.

The United Nations Panel of Experts on Libya said in a final report in September 2018 that the payment of interest and other income contradicted the decision to freeze Libyan assets in general and violated sanctions on Tripoli.
