ZUWARAH – A ship of the German non-governmental organization Sea Eye rescued 64 migrants off the coast of Libya on Wednesday, Italy’s La Repubblica reported.
The rescue operation took place after the NGO ship received alert from Alarm Phone, a telephone service that provides migrants in distress with an alarm number to support rescue operations.
According to La Repubblica, the migrants, who were off the coast of the Libyan city of Zuwarah, include 10 women and 6 children.
It is unclear where the NGO ship is heading right now. Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, has long maintained that Italy’s ports will be closed for NGO ships carrying migrants.
