The Address | Benghazi – Libya
ROME – Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, met on Monday evening deputy head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Ahmed Maiteeq, at the presidential palace in Rome to discuss the situation in Tripoli.
According to a statement by the Italian presidency, “the meeting is part of the broad diplomatic action conducted by the Italian government with the Libyan counterparts, the main international players and the United Nations to face the dangerous involution on the ground; and prevent the outbreak of a civil war susceptible to serious consequences for the Libyan population and the stability of the entire Euro-Mediterranean region.”
During the meeting, Conte “reiterated the need to reconstruct the path towards a political solution, which is the only sustainable option.”
The Italian premier also “highlighted the need to strengthen the cohesive commitment of the international community not to deflect from the common objective of an inclusive path of stabilization of the country.”
