The Address | Benghazi – Libya
TRIPOLI – Fighters of the terror group ISIS raised its flag in several locations in Tripoli, pictures obtained by The Address showed.
ISIS took the city of Sirte as its stronghold from 2015 to 2016, before Libyan forces combined with U.S. airstrikes wiped out ISIS combatants from the area. Although it no longer controls Libyan territory, ISIS sleeper cells still lurk in different parts of the country.
The presence of ISIS in Tripoli adds to the presence of other extremists groups fighting the Libyan National Army (LNA) such as the so-called the Benghazi Defense Brigade, which is a militia-coalition that includes Ansar al-Sharia.
Ansar al-Sharia, which had pledged allegiance to ISIS, is designated by the United States as a terrorist organization after it played a role in the attack that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.
