The Address | Benghazi – Libya
ROME – Italy’s government has written to the European Union asking it to ready a plan of action to deal with a possible flight of refugees from the armed conflict in Libya, Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said on Wednesday.
Milanesi was speaking at a joint news conference in Rome after talks with the United Nations envoy on Libya, Ghassan Salamé.
The UN envoy, for his part, expressed hope that Libya’s warring parties would come to the negotiating table before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, which is set to begin in early May.
“We have been obliged to suspend the initiatives that had brought progress in the country” said Salamé.
“This does not mean that these initiatives have been canceled. We are working to save what can be saved, but it takes time. Some creativity from all sides and also the support of the international community,” he said.
The Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Fied Marshal Khalifa Haftar, launched a military operation in April 4 to eliminate criminal and terrorist militias, which dominated Tripoli since 2011.
