TRIPOLI – The armed group responsible for the attempted attack on El Sharara oilfield on Monday confirmed that it is one of the militias allied with the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA).

Libya Al Ahrar TV, a channel funded by Qatar with headquarters in Turkey, has aired a video of the armed group, which call itself ‘the Ubari Protection Force’, showing a member of the group reading a statement and claiming responsibility for the attempted attack.

The fighter, which stood alongside a correspondent of Libya Al Ahrar TV, also said that the group has joined GNA forces.

El Sharara oilfield was attacked by an armed group but there was no impact on production, a field engineer said on Monday.

The attacked was quickly repelled by forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) which took control of the oilfield since February.
