ROME – Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, said on Tuesday that he will soon meet with General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
Conte’s remarks came after he met briefly today with Head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, at Palazzo Chigi.
Speaking to reporters at Pratica di Mare military airport, Conte reiterated that his government’s rejection to military solution in Tripoli.
“Today I met with President Al-Sarraj. There are no major movements on the Libyan territory,” said the Italian premier before adding, “but the scenario is critical and can evolve even more critically from one moment to the next”.
“I trust to meet directly with General Haftar soon, we will see where and when. To all I am saying that the solution cannot pass by military means”.
Clashes erupted in Tripoli between the Libya National Army (LNA) and militias of the GNA after LNA launched a military operation in the capital on April 4. LNA’s operation aims to eliminate militias and terrorist groups that dominated the capital since 2011.
